February, Dar, and girly crafts

This February brings with it so many different emotions, I can’t even begin to describe the way I’m feeling right now.

February often does that to me. Emotions coming down like sleet, hitting hard at first, then softening once they hit your skin and you embrace them with warmth.

It’s just… so… February.

Do you know Dar Williams? I love Dar. When Lucas and I were first dating {actually… almost exactly six years ago…} one of the {many} reasons I fell in love with him was the fact that he had one of Dar’s albums. You see, Dar and I are on a first name basis… I saw her in concert once in Portland when I was in high school. She played at a church… if I remember correctly…. and I have loved her ever since. Which puts us on a first name basis.

In any case, today I had her song February stuck in my head. Playing over and over.

And February was so long that it lasted into March
And found us walking a path alone together.
You stopped and pointed and you said, “That’s a crocus,”
And I said, “What’s a crocus?” and you said, “It’s a flower,”
I tried to remember, but I said, “What’s a flower?”
You said, “I still love you.”
~Dar Williams, February

Love it. That part of the song makes me smile every time I hear it.

You know what else makes me smile? Little girls who get practically giddy while making a Valentine for a certain Daddy! We had our weekly playdate with the kids grandparents today, and their Grandma Lou brought out all sorts of things to make Valentine’s with. Fynn lasted about five minutes… but Paige? She LOVED it! She could take or leave paint, but give the girl glitter stickers and some doilies and she’s ready to rock and roll. I can see craft boxes filled with glitter and sequins in our future…

Maybe February isn’t all that bad after all…

{and yes… that’s blue marker on Paige’s face… Grandma Lou – I’m sorry, but it was too cute to edit out! It’s faded a bit… hopefully it’ll come off by the time she’s twelve! :)}

  1. I’m so sorry to admit I don’t know Dar! But I do love those lyrics. Great. What a fun time it looks like your sweetie Paige is having.
I have never loved February. It’s the time of year when it feels like winter will NEVER end. BUT it’s the month that makes me appreciate the other months that much more!

  2. Glitter! I can practically feel her giddiness in that first picture. =>

And I don’t Dar either, but the “I still love you” line had me smiling. Will have to check her out.

  3. She’s just precious! Back when I listened to music, mainly before kids, I would listen to Dar every now and then. Also, you have my daughter’s sippy cup! It’s OK, though, she still doesn’t drink out of it.

  4. That first picture is beautiful! Her excitement is almost tangible.

  5. i actually love february… groundhog day and valentine’s day… i am giddy when i see the pinks & reds just days after christmas, and sometimes before! but seeing your sweetie working on her love nots is reminding me that i am waiting til the last minute. again. perhaps i could special order a glittered doily 🙂

  6. Paige’s beaming face (blue marker and all) just made my morning. I can see how faces like that would make even February (the longest shortest month we know) a beautiful time.
Haven’t heard the song before…but dig those lyrics. Must check it out…

  7. Her excitement in that first picture is just contagious!
I’ve never heard anything by Dar Williams, to be honest, but the lyrics you posted gave me a smile. Now I’m intrigued!

  8. Love her little dress and beaded necklace. She is so sweet.

  9. I’ll have to check out Dar.

February is always my bleakest month. Thank God it’s the shortest, because it feels like an eternity.

But that face, those smiles–oh, who could be sad today, having those to look upon?

  10. I think blue marker on your face is the sign of a good day. I still love making Valentines…..

  11. I’m with Kitch: did the calendar tinkerers purposefully make February the shortest? Maybe they were like us – sad to see it come, glad to see it go.

We made Valentines here yesterday too. Wish we were closer so we could have a big messy glitter marker glue party with you!

  12. So, so cute! This post makes me want to run home and make Valentines!
