Cupcakes, New England Style

Feb 7, 2010 001

I’ve had cupcakes on the brain. The kind that go with big cups of hot tea or lattes, eaten with friends who don’t mind if you talk with icing stuck on the corners of your mouth. The kind that’s as sweet as the women around you, as yummy as the conversation at hand.

The kind of cupcakes you share with fellow bloggers.

That’s right. Like at Cupcake ’10.

I’m thinking New England bloggers need some of that love.

So what do you say? I know there are several New England bloggers, looking to connect with each other outside of this whole online thing. How do I know? I keep getting emails asking if I know other bloggers in the area, and when I say yes, it’s almost always followed up with we should get together!

It doesn’t have to be anything formal, at all. Depending on how many people are interested, we could either do a lunch, a coffee date, or find someplace where we can spread out in comfy chairs – or even the floor – and sit with yummy treats and warm drinks and talk. Get to know each other, and dive into why we do this crazy thing that we spend hours on. Why we blog.

And I’m thinking the sooner the better. Yes, I’m attending BlogHer in August {I’ll be the one double fisting Diet Coke’s as to not be tempted by all the booze NYC has to offer…} but I think we all deserve a little treat to get us through until Spring. Plus, something smaller and not so overwhelming! So before our calendars get crazy with the chaos that comes with spring and summer, let’s have our cupcakes. How about March 2oth or 27th? ** Editing to add that March 13th is also on the table…**

Let’s move forward with this! If you’re interested, either leave a comment or send me an email (crnnoel at gmail dot com) and let me know where you’d be coming from, and what date you’d prefer, March 20th or 27th.

Once I have numbers, I can look into finding a venu that’s fairly central. I’d love to find something similar to what the ladies did at Cupcake ’10 {take a look at their site if you’re interested, looks like they had a fabulous time!} I’m hopeful that if there’s enough of us we could do something very similar fairly inexpensively, though I’m thinking more of a full day than an overnight. But I’m completely open to suggestions.

Even if it ends up being just a few of us, I think it’ll be worth our time. The connections we’ve all made through blogging are so real, so much a part of {at least my} life. Let’s take some time to honor our hard work and dive into a cupcake or two!

Spread the love, and spread the word 🙂 A gathering of hearts and voices is on the horizon… {what do you all think of Hearts&Voices as a get together name? I’ve been struggling trying to come up with a title of our own… I kind of like it…}

Lurking in the greens

Word on the bloggy street is that it’s Delurker Day… a day where the folks who lurk around blogs show themselves in the comments…

Jan 13, 2010 003

I always wonder who really reads this. I know there’s a few of you. Some post regularly, others read and run. Which is totally fine. I’ve been known to do the same.

Jan 13, 2010 006

But sometimes I want to shout a big “Helllloooooooo!!!!!!!!” into my computer screen, the portal to this crazy blog world.

Jan 13, 2010 009

So if you’re reading this today, say hello! Would love a chance to say thanks for reading, or just eat your veggies… 😉

Odds and ends

Because I’m still feeling a bit wonky… I figured now would be the time to tidy up some {fun!} odds & ends.

Last week, Cara from The Picky Apple left me a little treat, and bright and early this morning Kristin at Motherese left me a second helping of…

The Lemonade Stand Award

The Lemonade Stand Award is awarded for being a blogger who shows great attitude and gratitude.

Cara is one of the sweetest bloggers I’ve had the pleasure to get to know. On her site she shares valuable information on recipes, playdate ideas, craft projects for the little ones. And, most importantly, she has fantastic taste in boy names, and loves all things pumpkin and The Pioneer Woman as much {if not more!} than I do! I gobble up every post she publishes. If ever I find myself in her neck of the woods, you could bet your bottom dollar {or whatever that saying is…} that I will be sitting somewhere drinking pumpkin spice lattes with her, and the children will be having fun with toy tractors and firetrucks. Thank you, Cara, you made my day!

Kristen is a relatively new bloggging friend, but she is one of my first reads of the day. She’s one that I have to let her posts digest a little prior to commenting, because she packs them with insights and thoughtful ponderings that are provoking and inspiring at the same time. Kristin and I share a love of Diet Coke, The Colbert Report, and mothering our respective two children. Like Cara, I would love to sit down with Kristen, I’m sure our coffee date would last no less than five hours. Thank you, Kristen, you made my morning!

So, now I wanted to pass along the Lemonade Stand Award love to the following folks who are a few that always look forward to reading:

Nell at Casual Friday Every Day, Jo at Mylestones, Tricia at A Bit More than a Journal, Kristen at Motherese (truthfully, I wrote this up last night when it was soley from Cara, and then this morning was pleasantly surprised with this award two fold from Kristen, but I’m going to include her still because she’s just that fantastic!), Becca at Drama for Mama, Hyacynth at The Scoop on Poop and other Mama DramasKimFinger Foods & Sippy CupsWackyMummy, Just another Reason to Eat Chocolate, and Tricia at Gardner’s Have the Best Dirt

Like Cara mentioned when she doled out the award, I know not everyone has the time or willingness to participate. But if you do chose to, here’s what to do:

– Put the logo on your blog or within your post.
– Pass the award onto 10 bloggers {I say as many or as few as you choose…}
– Link the nominees within your post.
– Let the nominees know they have received this award.
– Share the love and link to the person from whom you received this award.

2009 was a fantastic year. We had ups and downs, like everyone else, but there were so many bright moments that outshine any of the negative ones. And for the first time in… a long time… I was not pregnant and did not give birth this year! Which feels odd, but good.

In any case, one of my favorite things that happened this past year was starting this blog. I’ve put a lot of heart and soul, late nights and deep’ish thoughts, into it. And in return, I can look through the entries and have a somewhat permanent record of our life. I’ve “met” so many wonderful folks through blogging, have expanded my reader to almost full capacity, and have enjoyed every moment I put into blogging.

I didn’t want to do a Best Of post, but I would like to share some of my favorite moments through the year…

In 2009* we…

participated in a CSA share {community supported agriculture}

had countless beautiful beach days

vacationed in Florida

danced in the kitchen to favorite tunes

went outside of our comfort zone in our living room

I felt like a fruitloop in a forest

remembered how much and why we love each other

also loved some trees

celebrated a few birthdays, one with a memorable cake disaster

had proud, and memory inspiring parenting moments

started embracing faith

and loved each moment of our every day life

Thank you for reading, for commenting, and for the encouragement. What a glorious year 2009 has been.

Here is to a safe and happy New Year! See you in 2010!

*obviously we had lots of fun moments before August, but this blog has only been up and running since Aug of 2009 😉

Keeping up w/ the old school blogging…

Kim, who is a beloved bloggy/twitter friend who happens to be a friend of a very good friend, who I’ll be hopefully having a girls night with soon because she’s so hilarious and sweet (though because our schedules don’t mesh we’ve only met ONCE!!), awarded me with the *ahem* Honest Scrap Award. A while ago… and I kind of forgot… (here’s to honesty!) but now I’ve remembered and am picking it up!

So, the rules are that I have to write out ten honest true possibly scary things about myself. And share with you all. And then tag 7 other bloggers to do the same. We’ll see about that… honestly, I’m not a fan of tagging people because I never know who really wants to play, or who would feel left out, or any of that! But we’ll work on that 😉

Here you go….

1. I love cheese. Like, so much I should think about moving to Wisconsin. I skip the crackers and just eat the cheese. Everything tastes better topped with cheese. I love cheese.

2. The first time Lucas told me he loved me, I said “no you don’t”, but knew he did, and knew I loved him, but for some reason felt the need to tell him he didn’t. I was probably scared, knew he was the guy I was going to marry, but I was doped up on cold meds… still… no excuse, I still feel bad about that to this day! Thankfully, he still married me.

3. I am very very afraid of the dentist. Very. So much so that I will probably  not sleep a wink the night before my next appointment (though that appointment still has to be made).

4. I love anything and everything pumpkin. Lattes, bread, muffins, cookies, candles, everything.

5. I have a very morbid fear of losing my husband and kids to a car accident. If you’ve read Cranberry Queen you can probably relate (though I think she lost her parents and brother, I can’t remember… it was her family though)… scared the heck out of me. So much so that I hate driving on the highway with the whole family. I take a lot of deep breaths and hold the handle bar on the door very tightly.

6. I hate to exercise. Play, hike, walk outside? Sure! Go to the gym for an intentional workout? No thank you.

7. When I was little I lived in my own little world. My dolls had names and stories to tell, the back yard was full of possibilities, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It brings me such joy to see my kids imaginations start to form and run wild! Fynn paddled to China the other day, and I couldn’t stop smiling.

8. I cannot explain why, but I feel so much more at peace since realizing my faith in God. I have a long journey ahead of me, but it’s one that I’m excited about and feel at ease and comforted taking.

9. I get the feeling of deja vu quite a bit, and I sometimes feel like I saw things in a dream that actually happened, but it’s fuzzy, and I’m never quite sure. Freaky!

10. I adore blogging. The community feeling it with comments and emails, the creative outlet, being heard… I love it all. And I’m proud of my blog, it’s very me, and very close to my heart. I love what it’s become and where it’s going. Don’t mess with a girl and her blog 😉

Here is where I’m going to get daring. I’m going to BREAK THE RULES! Because, frankly, as I mentioned above, I hate picking out people to tag for these things. And I already tagged a few bloggers in the last post.

So here’s the deal. As a Christmas present to those of you who are loyal readers and commenters, I’m going to dish out this award. All you have to do is grab the button, post ten honest bits about yourself, and pass it along however you see fit. Then come back here and leave a comment saying you’ve participated.

Hope I haven’t shaken things up too much…

Thank you so much Kim for the award! I’m so looking forward to our girls night soon 🙂

Now, tomorrow we’ll get back to our regularly scheduled blogging……….

Inquiring Minds…

My lovely friend Nell is trying to bring back some old school blogging fun… the meme! She wrote one up herself (click here to see her answers), and tagged me… so here are her questions, and my answers!

What Are You Listening To Right Now?

Right now I’m loving the Barenaked Ladies Christmas cd. I’ve been listening to it for weeks straight, I love it mostly though because every time their version of Jingle Bells comes on both kids lift up their shirts, run around the house, and beg to be tickled. I’m not really sure why… but it’s pure joy 🙂 But also, I’m still very much in love with Priscilla Ahn, Jack Johnson, and as always – James Taylor.

What Are You Watching Right Now?

Since we put our tv in the closet we have been watching much less tv, but we still watch regular tv through the hubby’s tv card on his laptop. I always have to watch my Thursday night shows on NBC (The office, Parks and Rec, etc…). Truthfully, that’s about it right now!

What Room Is Your Computer In?

Most of the time, the living room. Or on the counter in the kitchen (I have a small laptop which I just adore… it really makes all the difference!)

Do You Have Christmas Lights Up Outside?

Nope. Our deck has our grill, and the kids wagon. Nothing very festive!

How Long Have You Been Blogging?

I started a family blog in 2007, but have only been doing this one since August.

If You Could Go Back In Time, Where Would You Go, Who Would You Meet, Why?

I’ve always thought it would be interesting to be a part of the suffrage movement in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, to maybe be a suffragette. I would have loved to talk with a few of the pioneers that worked so hard for our rights.

If You Could Be Paid To Give Of Your Time To Others, What Would You Most Like To Do? (Volunteering)

I’d love to find a local women’s shelter and give them my time and energy. Maybe help to build job skills, and help women in need find their footing.

If Santa Could Bring YOU Something This Year, What Would That Special Something Be?

Sleep. Seriously. Sleep. And a pretty journal with a new pack of Sharpie pens 😉

If You Could Have Your Blog Readers Know One Thing About You. What Would That Be?

That I love blogging. And I love my life, but (like you, Nell) I’m not perfect and am only human. I make mistakes, on here and in life, and am still trying to figure it all out… which is something I’m not sure I’ll ever really do!

Tag You’re It

I’m going to open this up to anyone who wants to answer a few questions – I’d love to read all of your answers! Leave a comment with a link back to your blog once you’ve completed the meme and I’ll hop right over and take a look. The more the merrier.

But just for fun I’ll still tag a few…. Kim (and dude, I know… I still have to pick up that blog award on your site… I thank you kindly and promise to do it soon!!!) my friend Ashlee (though her blog is private, I still want to see your answers!), WackyMummy, and Hyacynth

So… get to it ladies 😉
Thanks Nell!!

For you, we blog

Recently I’ve been thinking about blogging. I keep getting the question from friends and family (who do not blog…) “why?” Normally I say it’s a hobby, keeps my mind active, etc. But aside from the whole closet introvert being able to get heard thing, it’s really about community. If you’re even remotely dedicated to blogging you’re accepted into this crazy, unique, inspiring, caring, and heartwarming community. It’s sort of like how you see motorcyclist wave to one another (or put their hand down, I’m not really sure what they do…) Bloggers nod to each other in acknowledgement. In this one way, we’re all the same. We rally behind one another, support each other, applaud and smile with one another. We are one.

Up until last night, I hadn’t heard of Anissa Mayhew (how I hadn’t, I have NO idea, after looking at her site she seems like the perfect combination of real, funny, and human that make me cry and laugh all at once, which you all know I adore in a blogger) But all of a sudden last night Twitter lit up with the hashtag #prayersforanissa and any fool would know something was up. Turns out Anissa is laying in a hospital ICU after suffering a stroke.

Now, I’m not going to pretend to know her. I’m not going to go on and on about her situation, because it’s not mine to talk about. What I do know is that she has touched many people (some of my bloggy friends even… six degrees of separation and all that!). And I know that she doesn’t deserve this.

So please, if you believe in prayer send up a few prayers for Anissa and her family. If you believe in hope, send a few wishes for hope for her. Anissa – know that we are all rallying behind you, and you are deeply loved. In real life, we’d all give hugs and bring your family casseroles. But for most of us, we will blog for you.

And seriously, this blogging thing, it’s incredible. Don’t underestimate the power of blogs.

Below are a few places you can help, and learn about Anissa.

Aiming Low, Hope for Anissa
